Dr. Bonnett has over 20 years of experience in general medicine, mostly working with female patients. For over a decade, she has researched and used natural hormone replacement to help women optimize function and well-being. She can help bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and applying that science to help real people regain health.

"Many women suffer from loss or imbalance of natural hormones. Hormone loss or imbalance can cause major symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood symptoms, and even memory issues. Hormone loss and imbalance is also associated with major medical problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and even increased cancer risk. Some women lose most of their hormones around the time of menopause, but many women have hormonal imbalance much earlier....even going back to their teens. Hormonal imbalance can cause emotional imbalance. Many women get placed on meds for depression and anxiety....when they would do better getting their hormones back to normal!" ~ Dr. Valerie Bonnett

This is a repeat of a post from a couple of months ago, but this is important information for anyone who has hormonal issues and is thinking about using hormone replacement.

Hormones are vital for optimal health but if they are used improperly, they can cause worsening symptoms and even increase the risk of breast and uterine cancer.

There is a LOT of debate and misinformation about hormone replacement. Although millions of women are using both synthetic and natural hormones, there are many different protocols using different delivery systems and HUGE differences in dosages. Hormones are extremely potent molecules and using higher doses of hormones than a young healthy adult would produce will cause serious problems.

So once again here are my rules for hormone replacement:
1. Measure and make sure hormone levels are low before starting therapy. Many women in their 40's and 50's, even those with hot flashes and night sweats, actually already have HIGH levels of estrogen. Since high levels of estrogen can increase the growth and division of breast and uterine cells, adding more estrogen to a woman who already has high levels is a recipe for disaster. More is not better when it comes to hormones!
2. Use bio-identical hormones-these are hormones which are plant-derived, but are exactly the same shape as the hormones produced in the human body.
3. Use physiologic doses, which means using an amount of hormone that is similar to that produced by a healthy young adult. Hormones are extremely potent. A little bit goes a REALLY long ways. Using high dosages of hormones are unproven and dangerous.
4. Never ever use estrogen without natural progesterone. Progesterone decreases the growth of breast cells-and it helps estrogen work better, so you can get a better effect with lower doses of estrogen. Progesterone also has benefits on brain health, mood, and bone density. Unfortunately, fake progestins like Provera are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
5. Check tissue levels of hormones after you have been on hormones for a few months to make sure levels are ideal and are in balance with each other. Blood levels are not accurate when using topical hormones. The normal levels of estradiol in blood serum is 5-100 times higher than that in saliva levels and normal progesterone levels can be up to 200 times higher than that in saliva. It takes very high dosages of topical hormones to get blood levels to increase. By the time blood levels start to increase, saliva levels can be extraordinarily high. This is extremely dangerous.
6. Work on stress reduction. High levels of cortisol are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Cortisol can cause damage to estrogens molecules, causing scary "mutant" estrogens which can stimulate the growth of breast cells. High stress levels also limit your immune system's ability to fight and kill cancer cells, and cause many other problems, like sleep deprivation, furthering increasing cancer risk. It is difficult to get great results with hormones until stress is controlled.

Hormones are complicated. It is important to follow all of these guidelines to get good results and to prevent harm.
